Abstract

This paper provides a systematic overview of recent trends in the growth and characteristics of international medical students in Argentine universities. The article synthesizes key global and Argentine trends in the expansion of international student flows and examines the evolution and distribution of international students in medical programs. It highlights the substantial enrollment growth over the past decade and its concentration in a few large public universities and some private ones. Additionally, it explores their demographic characteristics, identifying specific traits of cohorts from the main countries of origin. The fourth section presents some hypotheses to explain the logic and dynamics of international student flows to Argentina, with particular attention to general migration policy conditions, characteristics of the university system in comparison with those of students’ home countries, and the role of advisory agencies. The conclusions propose specific aspects that should be further explored to better understand university student mobility.
