The Internationalization of Higher Education

The internationalization of higher education has become established in recent decades as a key strategy for strengthening academic quality, integration, and research within institutions in today's interconnected world. It has undergone a profound transformation, becoming an essential component of institutional strategies and global educational policies. This article analyzes the evolution of higher education internationalization over the years, from its origins, primarily related to student and faculty mobility, to contemporary forms that integrate transnational cooperation and online education. The study examines the evolution of the internationalization of higher education in Europe, Latin America, and Argentina. It also explores the benefits and obstacles, its relationship to quality assurance policies, and the trends and future of higher education internationalization. The article concludes that internationalization can no longer be understood only as a phenomenon of mobility, but rather as a strategy that redefines the quality, equity, and relevance of higher education in an interconnected global context.
