It introduces the typology of research libraries and their different denominations, such as the specialized library that is established with an interest in one or several specific subjects to meet the information needs of scientific research. It constitutes a review article on this type of library by selecting seven documents from more than 200 articles, reports, theses, conferences, and other types of information sources, retrieved with the following search strategy: research libraries, academic and research libraries; specialized libraries; innovation and information technology -in Spanish and English-, in databases of peer-reviewed publications and specialized journals on the subject. It includes the topics raised in the documents, characterizes the authors and a summary of each one. It concludes on the importance of the development of research libraries in science, technology, and innovation
